Jake Albert goes wire to wire to win 68th Eastern Am
Jake Albert is a wire-to-wire winner in the 68th Eastern Amateur closing with a final round 1-over 71 in gusty conditions. Albert took a 4-shot lead into the final round but stumbled at the start when his tee shot found the water on the 1st hole. He made double bogey and followed with a bogey on the 2nd and his lead was down to 2. The turning point in the round probably came on the 4th hole. After clipping a tree off the tee, he left himself over 300 yards for his second on the 473-yard par-4. A long iron left about 80 yards, and he converted a 15-foot par putt to preserve a 2-shot lead. Solomon Petrie, a Toledo University junior wasn’t able to mount a charge playing the first 12 holes without a birdie. Albert settled after the 4th and converted birdies at the 6th and the 8th. On the 8th his 2nd shot went just long, and he rolled in a 20 ft putt from off the green to stretch his lead to six shots over Petrie and University of Louisville sophomore Clay Pendergrass. Albert, who will head to Auburn next week to start his college career cruised the rest of the way playing the last 10 holes even par. Petrie and Pendergrass shared 2nd place at 14-under. Elon’s Landon Durham was a shot back in 4th and Campbell Skelly of Providence University was 5th after posting the day’s low round at 4-under 66. Scoring conditions were much tougher in the 4th round which saw the scoring average 3 1/2 shots higher than the previous day.
